In the Spotlight

Here is a project that might help young peole in reocvery.
                  Reclaiming Futures

On Monday, December 13, 2010, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), along with many other partners, sponsored 38 young people from around the country to be part of “The Young People’s Networking Dialogue on Recovery (YPNDR).” All of the young recovery advocates volunteered their time to travel to Baltimore and have a very important dialogue.

I have been around many thousands of young people in recovery in various places over the past 9 years, but never before did they have a platform like this. At times during that meeting in Baltimore, I couldn’t help but step back and realize that this conversation was different … something special was going on.

Recovery High Schools
On the right hand side we have links under "Cool sites." One of those links is for Recovery schools. If you  haven't checked it out, now is a good time. It doesn't matter if you are in High School, college, or a trade school--they have contacts for you. Why go it alone? See what might work for you.

This week's Recovery School in the spotlight is Horizon High. Here is their mission statement:

The mission of Horizon High School is to provide a school that fosters emotional, social and academic growth for students who want to learn in an alcohol-free, drug-free environment. Students will actively assume responsibility in creating their own safe and nourishing community.
Our hope is that more schools like this create opportunities for those of use who want to do it sober!

The 'Big Book' For Young People

This is a 'we' program just as Young, Sober, & Free is a "we' book. Because none of us get clean and sober alone, we didn't write the book alone, either.  Young people from all over the country contributed their storeis, designed the chapters, and shared how getting clean and sober works in their lives.

Due to increasing product liability litigation, American liquor manufacturers have accepted the FDA's suggestion to add more warning labels to their products. Just as the warnings on cigarette packs "rotate" through a variety of cautions, alcohol products will also get one of the following warning notices:

  • WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may leave you wondering what the hell happened to your bra and panties.
  • WARNING: The consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like a retard.
  • WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe that ex-lovers are really dying for you to telephone them at four in the morning.
